Electric and natural gas customers throughout the country are being targeted by impostor utility scams each day. If you suspect someone is trying to scam you, hang up, delete the email or shut the door. Call PG&E at 1-833-500-SCAM (1-833-500-7226).
If you feel that you are in physical danger, call 911.
Customers who suspect that they have been victims of fraud, or who feel threatened during contact a scammer, should contact local law enforcement authorities.
Other ways to protect yourself from fraud/scams:
Ask for identification – PG&E representatives always carry their identification and are willing to show it to you.
Ignore the scammers – If a scammer threatens immediate disconnection or shut off without prior notification, you should hang up the phone. PG&E customers at risk of shut off will receive advance disconnection notification, typically by mail and included with the regular monthly bill.
Never use prepaid cards to pay bills – Scammers may instruct customers to purchase a prepaid card and call them back to make a bill payment, when the customer calls back with the prepaid card number, the scammer has instant access to the card’s funds. PG&E does not specify how customers should make a bill payment and offers a variety of ways to pay a bill including payments online, by phone, automatic bank draft, mail or in person.
