PG&E has approximately 100,000 miles of overhead lines and approximately 26,000 miles of underground lines across its service area. As part of our efforts to make our infrastructure more resilient, we have committed to undergrounding an additional 10,000 miles of lines in the communities with the highest risk of wildfire.
It is important to understand undergrounding does not address the wildfire threat our customers face right now. It is a complex process that can take years to complete. And the rocky, forested terrain seen in many of the most fire prone areas can prevent undergrounding as an option.
