If your power is out but no one else is, and you are sure your bill is current, you can troubleshoot your panel.
Follow these steps:
- Unplug appliances and electronics to avoid surge damage
-
Locate you main panel
- In apartments, this is often outside by the meters, separate from your individual panel in your home
- You will have one breaker switch that is much larger than the others. This may be two breaker switches hooked together. This is your main breaker.
- Flip the breaker all the way to the "off" position, then back to the "on" position
- If power is not restored, please call PG&E to report the outage at (800) 743-5002
If only certain rooms or appliances are affected, please follow the steps below to troubleshoot.
- Turn off or unplug equipment in the affected area
-
Reset your GFI Switch
- These are present in any rooms with water, typically the bathroom and kitchen. They are the buttons located on the outlet. Press the button to reset the GFI
If the power does not come back on, go to the next step:
- Locate your breaker box
- If you are in an apartment, you will locate the panel within your apartment, not the large panel by your meter
- Identify the breaker switch associated with the affected room or area
- Flip the switch all the way to the "off" position, then back to the "on" position
- If power is not restored to the area, you will need to contact an electrician
When your circuit breaker trips repeatedly, a problem with the equipment on that circuit may be the cause. Call an electrician if the equipment is unplugged and the breaker continues to trip.
